Where's My F*#king Lasagna?

May 31, 2023

Growing up and again when my children were at school, there was always a support and care community that rallied around and supported families going through challenging times. It was an opportunity to give some comfort in times when we didn’t know of any other way to show our care and support.

We’d bake batches of cupcakes, make pots of spaghetti and assemble trays of lasagna as a way to say “we’re here for you” and to show them that they are not forgotten and that there are people who care about them.

I’m sure the recipients were extremely grateful for the assistance and support when putting a meal on the table was the last thing they could focus on.

But… where’s your lasagna?

How often have you "baked" for others whilst dealing with your own crisis? How many times have you been in a challenging situation where you could have done with a bit of care and support? How often do you feel unseen?

How many times have you thought “Where’s my f’ning lasagna?”

I see you.

I’ve never asked for help. I’ve always been independent and ‘handled’ things on my own. I didn’t want to burden anyone. I didn’t want to show vulnerability or that I wasn’t in control. I thought that my situation wasn’t bad enough to warrant a lasagna. I just ‘got on with it’.

Does any of this sound familiar?

We live in a society that values self-reliance and independence. We're constantly bombarded with messages telling us that we need to be able to take care of ourselves. We are taught that we should be able to take care of ourselves and that vulnerability is often seen as a negative thing. We are taught to be strong and to never show weakness.

There are many reasons why we might not ask for help. We may be afraid of being judged, or we may feel like we don't deserve help. We may also be afraid of appearing weak or incompetent.

We wear resilience as a badge of honour.

We all need a lasagna at some point in our lives.

We have a need to be seen. It's a basic human need for connection and belonging. When we feel seen, we feel understood, accepted, and valued. We feel like we belong. Feeling seen is important for our mental and emotional health.

It’s your turn for lasagna.

I see you.
